The Best Whisky I've Tasted In A Long Time - And A Well Kept Secret - Forbes

But I digress.
Forbes writers have the ability to call out member comments they find particularly interesting.

I travel to learn, eat, golf and ski, but mostly for travel's sake

Balblair has been making whisky since 1790, and I'm sort of embarrassed to say I have never tasted it before. I am the Contributing Travel Editor for Cigar Aficionado Magazine, have my own golf travel blog, larrygolfstheworld.com, and am a co-founder of TheAPosition.com, the leading golf travel website. And your recipient is unlikely to already have it.

The more recent 2001 vintage.
Larry Olmsted, Contributor
I tasted the 2001 and the 1989 and they are very similar and both exquisite. I tweet @TravelFoodGuy
In this column I've occasionally written about prestigious Scotch whisky labels that offer special vintage releases, such as The Macallan, which periodically rolls out collector bottles from single years. All Balblair vintages maintain the distillery's core flavor characteristics, but each is made unique by the amount of time it spends in the cask, and the composition of the casks themselves.  John MacDonald, Balblair's Distillery Manager, handpicks each vintage for release when he thinks it is at the peak of perfection. The opinions expressed are those of the writer. But Balblair is even better. California's The Whisky Shop has a particularly deep selection with most vintages and the Balblair site list dozens of US retailers.
The best whisky you probably have never heard of, from the only distillery in Scotland making exclusively vintage Scotch.

In his seminal World Atlas of Whisky, a fantastic guide that every fan of whiskies - wherever they come from - should have in his or her library (I've written about it here before), the sagacious Dave Broom describes every vintage of Balblair he rates as "Fruity & Spicy," and compares it to a more famous nearby distillery by saying, "both Balblair and Glenmorangie are fruity, they are different types of fruit: Glenmorangie is light, carried along on a wave of oak, while Balblair is fuller and richer." And did I mention smooth? This is the kind of whisky that if you sat on the deck with a friend after dinner you would be hard pressed to stop drinking.

One very notable exception is Balblair, the only Scottish distillery that releases nothing but vintage whisky. Searching online, I found the 2000 for $59 and the 1991 for $120 at one New York state shop and the 1989 for $117 from another. Called-out comments are highlighted across the Forbes network. Specifically, Balblair comes from the Northern Highlands, near Inverness, a part of Scotland many tourists skip but is well worth visiting as it is home to some of the best golf courses most travelers miss, specifically Royal Dornoch, Cruden Bay, Trump Scotland and Castle Stuart. But the vast, vast majority of whiskies, Scotch, Irish, bourbon, rye, Japanese, whatever, are not vintage. I won't make that mistake again, and it immediately jumps to the top of my Scotch pantheon. It is simply wonderful stuff. I have had weekly columns in USA Today and Investors Business Daily, published thousands of articles in leading magazines from Playboy to Popular Science, and am the author of Getting Into Guinness. Personally I am not a fan of the peaty style, but many, many Scotch lovers are, and the fundamental schism is so great that they are almost two different spirits, so bear that in mind in my assessment.

I have been traveling the world as a journalist and passionate lover of all things fun for nearly 20 years. 2, 2013. I love every kind of travel, active, cultural and leisurely, and my special areas of expertise are luxury hotels and resorts, golf, skiing, food, wine and spirits. From the samples I just tasted, I'd say he is pretty much excellent at his job.

Balblair is a Highland whisky, which in general us are far removed from the peaty, smoky seaside malts of Islay, Jura, Skye and the Kintyre peninsula. Come for whisky and stay for ACL live the following day.

The author is a Forbes contributor. In fact, for $62 this is a steal among Scotches, better than bottles I've tried at ten times the price.

Learn more and taste the Balblair 2001 for yourself at Whiskies of the World Austin on Oct. The distillery claims that its fruitiness comes from doing everything the old mechanical way, rather than with automation, in short, fat stills that capture flavor from the yeast during fermentation.
There are currently nine vintages available through Balblair's website, as recent as 2002 and as old as 1965, and some of these can be found at top US retailers. It compares very favorably with my all-time favorite, the Macallan and both are very smooth yet rich and full, a difficult mix to achieve, but whereas the Macallan relies upon Sherry casks as its secret flavor ingredient, the Balblair does not.

. They may have an age statement, like 12 years old, but that means all the whiskies blended in (or vatted if we are talking single malts) are at least that old. And Larry, if you are in the neighborhood, let me know and I'll put you on the Media list. The 1989 is definitely just a touch fuller, but the flavor profile is nearly identical, and if it were my money, given that the Whisky Shop sells the 2001 for $62 and the 1989 for $125, I'd rather have two bottles of the 2001. It's also a great gift, as the bottles are really sharp looking and each is presented in a sophisticated display box which beautifully portrays the distillery's surrounding area. While it is the standard practice for wines, it is pretty uncommon for quality whiskies to be made entirely from the distillation of single year and sold as vintage.

Douglas, Thanks sounds like fun but can't make it this year, though Austin is one of my favorite cities to visit.
In Scotch parlance, this part of the Highlands is better known as the home of Dalmore and Glenmorangie, two excellent single malts that do fit my taste and are among my go to standards. You'll be notified if your comment is called out

Racing Dog, Greyhound and Lurcher

During the early 1920s, modern greyhound racing was introduced into the United States and introduced into United Kingdom (Belle Vue) in 1936 and Northern Ireland (Celtic Park) on April 18th 1927 and immediately followed by Shelbourne Park in Dublin very soon after.
History
According to Pokorny the English name "greyhound" does not mean "gray dog/hound", but simply "fair dog". The travellers considered the short-haired Lurcher the most prized. The name Lurcher is a derived name from the Romani language word lur, which means thief. Today some breeding is carried out in a more systematic manner, with Lurchers bred to Lurchers to perpetuate the "breed's" prowess at rabbit and hare coursing.

Hybrid vigour and working dogs. The Collie crosses were often not large enough to do the work the Lurcher was intended for.

The Greyhound is a breed of dog that has been primarily bred for coursing game and racing. It is a hardy crossbred sighthound (usually a greyhound) that is generally a cross between a sighthound and a working breed, usually a pastoral dog or Terrier. Since the beginning, we’ve focused on providing the best user experience possible. Only the top-producing pups were kept; the rest were sold at traditional bargain rates. "Hund" is the antecedent of the modern "hound", but the meaning of "grig" is undetermined, other than in reference to dogs in Old English and Norse.
The Lurcher was bred in Ireland and Great Britain by the Irish Gypsies and travellers in the 17th century. The race was held as a warm up to both the horse and greyhound derbies were held on the following Saturday.

There is no set type, so they can be as small as a Whippet or as large as a Deerhound; but most are chosen for a size similar to that of a Greyhound, and a distinct sighthound form is preferred.
Irish Romany or Roma people were instrumental in developing the breed, and traditionally sneered at any Lurcher that was not predominantly genetically Greyhound, since these "lesser" Lurchers were not as good at hunting and could not stand a full day's work of the hunt. Click the picture for more information.
The lurcher has as many varied uses as types can be crossbred, but generally they are used as hunting dogs that can chase and kill their prey. Similarly, nobility owned most land and commoners were not allowed to hunt game on crown land or other noble estates.

Lurcher
The name "greyhound" is generally believed to come from the Old English grighund. They have also been successfully used on deer. The race was two furlongs (400m) on the horses preferred grass track. Click here for the free article.
The breed's origin can be traced to ancient Egypt, where a picture depicting a smooth-coated Saluki (Persian Greyhound) or Sloughi was found in a tomb built in 4000 BC. The lighter colours, patch-like markings and white appeared in the breed that was once ordinarily grey in colour. This may be confusing, however, as the deerhound and wolfhound are more commonly grey in colour and possibly the true origins of the greyhound.   It is known that in England during the medieval period, Lords and Royalty keen to own greyhounds for sport, requested they be bred to colour variants that made them easier to view and identify in pursuit of their quarry. Historically, these sight hounds were used primarily for hunting in the open where their keen eyesight is valuable. Despite this, Simply F.'s lethal acceleration meant the horse couldn't catch him. They were used for poaching rabbits, hares and other small creatures. Analyses of DNA reported in 2004, however, suggest that the greyhound is not closely related to these breeds, but is a close relative to herding dogs.
A new great post to read book on the evolution of another interesting group of dogs the working Bull & Terrier family. Lurchers can be crossed several times. A combination of long, powerful legs, deep chest and aerodynamic build allows it to reach speeds of up to 72 km/h (45 mph) in less than one and a half seconds, or within 3 strides! If you are new to greyhounds or other running dogs, then seeing is believing; it is phenomenal!
The Lurcher is not a dog breed, but rather a type of dog. The original lurchers therefore were generally heavier-coated dogs who could herd sheep as well as bring home a rabbit or hare for the pot.

Until the early twentieth century, greyhounds were principally bred and trained for coursing. A totally new and non-reproduced article Download by clicking here.

Racing Dog, Greyhound and Lurcher

Generally, the aim of the cross is to produce a sighthound with more intelligence, a canny animal suitable for the original purpose of the lurcher, poaching. Subsequent words have been derived from the Proto-Indo-European root *g'her- 'shine, twinkle': English gray, Old High German gris 'grey, old', Old Icelandic griss 'piglet, pig', Old Icelandic gryja 'to dawn', gryjandi 'morning twilight', Old Irish grian 'sun', Old Church Slavonic zorja 'morning twilight, brightness'. Most lurchers today are used for general pest control, typically rabbits, hares, and foxes. These were settled on Wednesday 2nd, May, 2004, at Kempton Park, England, when Simply Fabulous (greyhound) raced Tiny Tim (horse). Developed in the Middle Ages in Great Britain and Ireland, the lurcher was created because only nobility were allowed to have purebred sighthounds like Irish Wolfhounds, Scottish Deerhounds, and Greyhounds, whereas crosses, or curs, had no such perceived value. Its origin does not appear to have any common root with the modern word "grey" for colour, and indeed the greyhound is seen with a wide variety of coats. The Lurcher is rarely seen outside of Ireland or Great Britain, and is still common in its native land. Horses, like greyhounds, are commonly used in racing, which had led to arguments over which is quicker. The greyhound is the only dog mentioned by name in the Bible.

It was important that the lurcher did not resemble too closely a sighthound, as the penalties for owning a sighthound were high,  particularly given that if you owned one then by default you were considered a poacher. Lurcher can be used for hare coursing, although most hare coursing dogs are Greyhounds. The common sense of these words is 'to shine; bright'.
Our. Collie crosses have always been very popular. It is believed that they (or at least similarly-named dogs) were introduced to the area now known as the United Kingdom in the 6th and 5th century BC from Celtic mainland Europe although the Picts and other hunter gatherer tribes of the Northern area (now known as Scotland) were believed to have had large hounds similar to that of the deerhound before the 6th century BC.
